High Holiday Campaign 2017

Dear Lincoln Square Synagogue Family,

In 1962, a fellow named Danny Mars Margolis, who was new to the Upper West Side, decided to look for a synagogue on Yom Kippur to say Yizkor. He was turned away at the door of an established synagogue in the neighborhood because he did not have a ticket. Mr. Margolis vowed to start his own synagogue the next year, where no one would ever be turned away for want of a ticket for the High Holidays.

He gathered some like-minded people to form a small synagogue that first met in an apartment in Lincoln Towers. That synagogue eventually became Lincoln Square Synagogue, spiritual home to all of us. Although today we sell tickets to raise funds needed to operate, the congregation has remained true to Danny's vision of not turning away anyone who does not have a ticket.

Giving tzedakah to LSS allows each of us make a difference in a community that we care about. The High Holiday Campaign is about providing our membership with an avenue to express their love for our community and appreciation for what we have.

LSS has continued to grow in square footage in our beautiful building, and has maintained its dedication to bringing our community daily programming, minyanim, and acclaimed speakers. This year we have experienced special events such as the Women’s Bat Mitzvah Project, the LSS Hospitality Shabbaton, and countless memorable scholars-in-residence and classes. But all these special opportunities come at a price.

The High Holidays, with all their associated costs, are a time when the shul needs help more than ever. While many other shuls raise money through auctions during the chagim, this campaign is our significant source of income and a primary source of High Holiday funds. This year, let us continue to ensure that we are always a community where no one is ever turned away and there are opportunities for everyone to participate.

Sincerely,

The High Holiday Campaign Committee
