Mission

Welcome to LSS!

From its humble beginning in 1964, in an apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Lincoln Square Synagogue (LSS) has grown into a model for the integration of Orthodox Judaism and contemporary life. The Synagogue is a diverse, vibrant congregation that provides religious, social, and educational opportunities and outreach to its neighborhood and well beyond.

On Shabbat, LSS offers numerous service types and times, including those in our spacious Nathaniel Richman Cohen Sanctuary and Belfer Bet Midrash. Perhaps you wish to worship early in a simple, no-nonsense Hashkama Minyan; maybe you prefer the Cantor Sherwood Goffin Memorial Minyan led by a cantor and featuring an inspiring sermon; maybe your speed is the Beginners' Service, our "No Hebrew Necessary" experience with open, honest discussions of Judaism and prayer; perhaps the later Rabbi Herschel Cohen Memorial Minyan, with its shiur, cholent and kugel is more your thing.  The LSS schedule of services on festivals and both American and Israeli holidays is also robust!  However you worship, newcomer or old-timer, member or guest, you will find a spiritual home here.

LSS offers programs that touch every area of spiritual and personal growth.  Children, parents, singles, couples, professionals, seniors, Hebrew- and Yiddish- and English-speakers...we have classes and programs for all.  A book club, film screenings, theater outings, wine and whisky tastings, Torah and Talmud study are open to all.  LSS also features scholars-in-residence, and seasonal and themed lecture series with renowned rabbis, educators and thought leaders.  American Sign Language interpreters and braille siddurim are available on request at inclusion@lss.org.  LSS youth activities are open to all, regardless of cognitive or physical challenges.  We are determined to meet the needs of every adult and child.

LSS also provides for those experiencing the best and worst of times.  The Synagogue's Chesed Committee and Fund, Louis Lazar Benevolent Fund, and Leah Segre Tomchei Shabbos Fund coordinate and cover the cost of meals for community members recovering from illness, sitting shiva, or welcoming a newborn. LSS also organizes clothing and food drives and countless other services for those in need. The Chesed team is reachable at chesed@lss.org.
