Janice Weinman & Stuart Shorenstein

Guests of Honor

Stuart A Shorenstein is respected by his colleagues and clients for his resourcefulness, creativity, intellect, passion and effectiveness on behalf of the Firm's clients. A member of the Business Law Department, Stuart also heads up the Firm's New York Public Strategies team, where he advocates on behalf of clients with decision makers in all branches of local, state and federal government.

Over the past three decades, Stuart has been involved in national, local and state politics. He has served on transition teams at the national level for President Clinton, as well as statewide officeholders. He and his family have hosted events and provided strategic advice to literally hundreds of candidates, including senators, governors, congressmen and local and state officeholders and office seekers in New York. He has represented colleges, ports, major insurance companies, industry associations, not-for-profit organizations and a host of companies seeking change in government policy or an opportunity to present their positions and have their voices heard. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Citizens Crime Commission of New York.  He serves on the Board of Project Rebirth and is a member of the National Council of AIPAC.

Dr. Janice Weinman Shorenstein, born in London and a resident of New York City, currently serves as ED/CEO of Hadassah, an organization comprised of 330,000 members, donors and supporters with nearly 900 chapters around the United States. The organization owns the Hadassah Medical Organization in Israel and offers programs on healthcare, leadership development and Advocacy in the U.S. Immediately prior to coming to Hadassah she was the President of Kids In Distressed Situations, Inc. (K.I.D.S.)  K.I.D.S is an international charity that annually provides new products to approximately 40 million children in need around the U.S. and the world.  Previously, she served as Corporate Vice President for External Affairs at Mount Sinai-N.Y.U. Medical Center, where she oversaw marketing, communications, PR, and government and community relations for the five hospitals of the merged entity.  Before that she served as Assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Education during the Clinton Administration. Prior to that, she was the Executive Director of the American Association of University Women, the national organization that promotes education and equity for women and girls. 

Before her appointment to AAUW, Janice was the Executive Vice President at the College Board, a national non-profit association of some 3,000 colleges, secondary schools, school systems, educational associations, and agencies best known for its services to aid students in transition from high school to college. There she oversaw all programs and field offices for the organization.

Debra & Adam Verstandig

Young Leadership Award

Adam Verstandig is a Partner at the international law firm, Jones Day. Adam’s practice focuses on the representation of financial institutions in real estate finance and development, with particular emphasis on construction lending and credit enhancement of tax-exempt bonds for the financing of affordable multifamily housing. He also advises on secured single-lender and syndicated credit facilities, mezzanine loans, workouts, and restructurings. He has experience representing private equity investors in the formation and operation of joint ventures.

Debra Verstandig is Counsel at the international law firm, Reed Smith. Debra practices in the financial industry group, focusing on financial services litigation and commercial dispute resolution. Debra provides litigation, credit risk and restructuring counsel to institutional lenders and investors. Debra was previously in-house counsel at General Electric Capital Corporation.

Adam has been involved with Lincoln Square Synagogue since his law school days over 10 years ago, and was one of the founding LSS Young Professionals. Debra joined Adam as a member of LSS when they were married in 2011. Since that time, Adam has chaired High Holiday Campaigns, the Torah Campaign, has been a member of the Nominating Committee, and is currently serving on the LSS Board of Directors as a Governor. Debra was an officer of the LSS Board from 2013-2015, serving as Executive Secretary, and is currently a Trustee. Debra has co-chaired multiple LSS Annual Dinners, holiday events, fundraisers and other activities particularly geared towards the LSS Young Professionals. Debra is also co-chairing the Catering Committee. The Verstandigs live on the Upper West Side with their most prized accomplishment, their 1.5 year old son Caleb, who is a proud member of the youngest LSS contingency.

 

Wendy Baker

Community Service Award

In her many years at LSS, Wendy has dedicated herself to deepening the shul's commitment to chesed. As a result of her ingenuity and incredible heart, LSS has donated hundreds of thousands of tons of food to the greater West Side community through the Food Funnel and Chametz Drive. Countless homeless and hungry people have benefited from Wendy's devotion and she has provided us, as a community, with a continued opportunity to do chesed. We are so fortunate to benefit from her incredible work.
