Evening with author Yardena Schwartz to discuss her book,
Ghosts of a Holy War:
The 1929 Massacre in Palestine that Ignited the Arab-Israeli Conflict.

Sunday, March 16 at 7:30pm at Lincoln Square Synagogue (180 Amsterdam Ave)

Yardena will speak about her recently released book, Ghosts of a Holy War: The 1929 Massacre in Palestine that Ignited the Arab-Israeli Conflict. Through the never-before-told story of a young American who moved to what was then Palestine in 1928, Yardena weaves 100 years of history in the Holy Land to demonstrate how the issues today cannot be fully understood without the context of ground zero of this century-old war.

Evening with author Gila Fine to discuss her book, The Madwoman in the Rabbi's Attic: Rereading the Women of the Talmud.

Thursday, June 5 at 7:30pm at Lincoln Square Synagogue (180 Amsterdam Ave)

Women in the Talmud are generally marginal and almost always anonymous – the daughters, sisters, and wives of prominent rabbis. The Madwoman in the Rabbi’s Attic explores the stories of the exceptions. In each case, a careful rereading reveals that there is a lot more to the story than initially meets the eye; that the heroine is far more complex than she first seems, In presenting us with archetypes that systematically break down, the Talmud imparts profound moral teachings about how to read the characters of a text and, ultimately, how to regard the people in our lives.
