Meet Shirley Wald and Paris Wald Stulbach

Beatrice and Gerson Wald pioneered a new shul. It was the 1960s, and one can imagine that the Walds saw the shul as an anchor to Jewish tradition when America was in upheaval. Harder to imagine is that they envisioned their great-granddaughters Amalia, Orly, and Keren Stulbach carrying on that tradition in the same shul, now the renowned Lincoln Square Synagogue, that the Walds helped to found. The mesh in this four-generation chronicle are Shirley Wald and Paris Wald Stulbach.

Shirley married the Walds' son, Mark. The two jumped in full-bore as lay leaders of the shul, a role Shirley maintained without losing a step even after Mark's lamented passing. Like her in-laws, Shirley is an L.S.S. pioneer, as a charter member of the Women'sChevra Kadisha and the Hospitality Committee. Shirley is on the front lines of chesed : visiting the sick, running clothing drives, arranging Shabbat meals, delivering bread to the homeless, and, as an extension of Shirley's calling as a New York Cornell Hospital nurse, organizing blood drives. Shirley is an L.S.S. Trustee. Her unmatched versatility -- Shirley is the Swiss Army Knife of L.S.S. volunteers -- makes her views on a wide array of subjects among the most insightful at meetings of the Board.

Shirley and Mark's daughter Paris thinks L.S.S. is a fun place! That's because she and her sister, Dina, started in the shul's pre-school program baking challah every Friday. Now a bit older, and after serving on the Chesed and Shiva Committees, Paris is a shul Officer and chairs the Nominations Committee. Beyond the shul, Paris volunteers at soup kitchens and works on improvements in Central Park, in Brooklyn, and on Governor's Island. It's a wonder she has time for her job as a Senior Producer for Bloomberg Television. Paris continues her late father's tradition of compiling the names of U.S. service members killed in action to be read during Shabbat services. But the family tradition Paris is most devoted to is rearing, with her husband, Dr. Harry Stulbach, their three daughters, the fourth generation to cherish and be cherished by Lincoln Square Synagogue.
