ISRAEL UPDATE - May 9, 2008
Despite Incentives, Iran Rejects Nuclear Halt

Iran on Monday said it would not accept any incentives package from world powers if the deal required Tehran to stop enriching uranium—a key step toward developing nuclear weapons, Reuters reported. "Those incentives that violate the Iranian nation's right [to nuclear technology] in any form will not be reviewed by the Islamic state," said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammed Ali Hosseini. In 2006, Tehran rejected an incentives proposal offered by the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council—the United States, France, Britain, China and Russia—and Germany. Iran has rebuffed multiple binding U.N. Security Council resolutions demanding it suspend its atomic work.

Musical Note By Cantor Sherwood Goffin
MODZITZER MASTERPIECE

One of the great masterpieces of chassidic melody is the Prok Yas Anoch, written by the Modzitzer Rebbe of Pre-war Europe, Rabbi Saul Taub, z”l.
In recent times, it was popularized by Mordechai Ben David Werdyger, who recorded it on his classic album, Just One Shabbos. The words plead with G-d to bring us out from exile, “from the mouth of lions.”
This melody is in the “minor mode,” and therefore is valid for use in Mimkomo of our Musaf Kedusha. More importantly, the words parallel that of Mimkomo, which pleads to G-d: “Turn with compassion and be gracious to your people.”
It is a powerful plea set to a most poignant melody.

Daven well and sing along!

D’var Torah by Amos Alter

This week’s Sedrah contains Shor o Kesev, the Yom Tov reading for the First Day of Succot (outside Israel, the first two days -- it is also read on the Second Day of Pesach, in Israel where it is Hol HaMoed, in three Aliyot, and outside of Israel, where it is the Second Day of Yom Tov, in five Aliyot. The first few verses, however, seemingly have nothing to do with Yom Tov. If we were to start reading where it begins to discuss the Moadim , there would still be enough text to make the necessary number of Aliyot, even on Shabbat. Why do we start where we do?

I believe the answer lies in one of those introductory verses, containing the Mitzvah of oto v’et b’no, the prohibition of slaughtering a cow, ewe or nanny-goat, and her calf/lamb/kid, on the same day (Yes, despite the masculine language of the verse, it means the female parent, and the child of either sex). The prohibition applies both to animals which have been sanctifed to be offered on the altar, and to those which have not. It applies to the one slaughtered second, be it the mother or the child, and regardless of whether the same person slaughtered the first. In a sense, it’s the mammalian equivalent of the ornothological Mitzvah of shiluah haken, sending away the mother bird, although there are significant differences -- the latter does not apply to domesticated birds, while the former applies, as a practical matter, only to domesticated animals; in the former, you have a choice of which to slaughter, the mother or the offspring, while in the latter case, you may choose only the offspring, and must spare the mother.

So what does this have to do with Yom Tov? It doesn’t. What it has to do, as we shall see, is with Erev Yom Tov. Other of our Yom Tov Torah readings, telling the stories of the events which the respective holidays commemorate, begin their stories with events before Yom Tov. The Torah portion for the first day of Pesach begins with Moshe Rabbeinu giving instructions about the Korban Pesach, including the acquisition thereof, which was to take place on the Tenth of Nisan; the Exodus on the Fifteenth is recounted only later. The Torah portion for the Seventh Day of Pesach, culminating in the splitting of the Sea and the Song thereof -- the events of the day being celebrated -- begins with events which occurred several days earlier. The Torah portion for Shavuot begins with matters happening on Rosh Hodesh Sivan.

So, too, with the Yom Tov reading of Shor o Kesev. The commandment of oto v’et b’no has special significance on Erev Yom Tov. According to Rebbe (Hulin 83), there is a requirement on Erev Yom Tov, which does not exist otherwise, to advise the potential buyer of an animal that “I sold the mother today”, if that is the fact. That’s because on Erev Yom Tov, the presumption is that the buyers of both animals intend to slaughter them that day, to have meat for Yom Tov. On other days, that presumption of same-day slaughter does not exist, and therefore there is no requirement to warn the second buyer about the first sale.

The reading of Shor o Kesev is not recounting the story of any particular Yom Tov, but is talking about the Chagim in general. The introductory verses therefore talk about Erev Yom Tov in general.

Shabbat Shalom!
