Lincoln Square Synagogue provides a full range of chesed and charitable programs. Please see below for an overview of some of the most notable.

Your generosity allows us to support numerous worthy causes. Nearly every day, people with all types of needs come to the Synagogue to seek assistance from our Chesed Fund. Aside from the numerous individuals that we assist there are three basic categories of Institutions and Organizations that we support: centers of Torah learning, special needs and orphanages. For more information, please contact Rabbi Robinson via the shul office or rabbi@lss.org.

Bikur Cholim volunteers meet in front of the synagogue on each Shabbat to visit patients at Roosevelt Hospital - please check the Shabbat Echod for current times. New volunteers are welcome and urged to join.

The Louis Lazar Benevolent Fund provides free meals to those recovering from illness or childbirth and, G-d forbid, those sitting Shiva. The Fund also provides free religious articles (mezuzot, tefillin, seforim, etc) to those in need. If you or someone you know recently had a child, or you can help prepare meals, please contact Joy Wildes at 212-721-2809. If you know of anyone requiring any of the services that the Fund provides, please contact the Shul office.

The Lea Segre Tomchei Shabbos Fund is actively seeking donations in order to continue this very worthy cause. Please be as generous as you can. Send your checks to the office, made out to "LSS-Segre Tomchei Shabbos Fund".

Saturday evening, erev Chanukah 5765, Lincoln Square Synagogue, with the inspiration of its Torah Mitzion Kollel, began the rewarding project of Adopting a Unit of the Israel Defense Forces.

The unit that we decided to adopt, has a special meaning to our community. Among the 150 soldiers in Unit 932, The Owls of Granite, "Yanshufim MiGranit", is one of our very own members 25 year old Elliot Zweig (son of Bernie Zweig and Penny Ostreicher, and grandson of Sylvia Ostreicher), who recently decided to give up over a year of his life and devote it to the defense of the state of Israel.

Our mission, in LSS, will be to support our adopted unit in various ways emotionally and financially. Our first endeavor is to purchase "army regulation fleeces" for them, as they are going to be stationed in the Golan during the coldest months of the year. The LSS youth department is, at the same time, writing letters and making picures for them, so they get to know all of the LSS members – from the youngest to the oldest!

As time goes on, we will take on other projects that will add to the quality of life of these soldiers; the details of which the "LSS Adopt an IDF UNIT" committee will share with the community through our Shabbat Echod, periodic letters, and emails. Bar and Bat mitzvah kids will be encouraged to make our adopted unit part of their chesed project, and when our members visit Israel, we will be able to arrange a visit with our unit, if feasible (depending on the logistics and security constraints of the moment).

The committee is looking for volunteers to dedicate some time to this ongoing project. Please contact the shul office, or email Bernie Zweig to be part of this very special endeavor.

Latest Update (as of February 18)

This week our IDF Unit, "The Owls of Granite" finished their combat training and are now moving to the north, to Har Dov, where they will help maintain the border with Lebanon. Thanks to the generosity of the LSS & greater community, we have achieved our goal in raising the funds for the purchase of "super warm fleeces" for our "Owls of Granite".
