NEW BUILDING UPDATE                  August 31, 2012
 
Construction Progresses on our New Building!
The temporary wood platform has been removed from the sanctuary exposing the stepped floor and the bima in this view from the platform.  Tile in the second floor corridor is being completed.  Sprinklers and fire alarms are being installed. 
What You Can See . . .
The new egress walkway concrete is being replaced due to faulty workmanship.    
 
Behind the Curtains . . .
After a significantly more difficult installation than was anticipated, the DEP approved the water connection.  The deeper and larger sewer excavation is underway.

Construction Progresses on our New Building!
Tiles are being installed in the second floor corridor and the service kitchen walls. The doors have been installed on both elevators. Sheet rock walls are being prepared for painting.

What You Can See . . .
Concrete has been poured for the emergency egress walkway.
 

Behind the Curtains . . .

The plumbers have reached and tapped the water main on Amsterdam Avenue.

Construction Progresses on our New Building!
The electricians and carpenters are installing lighting fixtures and sheet rock on the second floor. The plumbers continue work on sprinklers and the water connection.

The fence around the second floor terrace is being installed.

Construction Progresses on our New Building!
The plumbers are deep under Amsterdam Avenue chopping bed rock to install our water service. The electricians are installing lighting fixtures followed by the carpenters completing walls and ceilings.
 
What You Can See . . .
The contractor is removing the previous sidewalk at the back of the West End Synagogue to prepare for the new emergency egress.

The main kitchen equipment has been delivered.

Construction Progresses on our New Building!
Installation of the main stair up from the ballroom has started. Light fixtures are being installed in the Beit Midrash. Door frames and doors are being installed throughout the building.

What You Can See . . .
The remaining scaffolding has been removed allowing a full view of the facade. Construction of the rear emergency exit sidewalk is starting.

Behind the Curtains . . .


We have been informed that occupancy will not be possible by
mid-October as hoped. The project team is reviewing the schedule.

Construction Progresses on our New Building!
The main passenger elevator platform is operational; door frames are being installed at the service elevator. The main stairway from the mezzanine to the second floor is in place. The carpenters have finished the sanctuary ceiling and installed the troughs for the ceiling and the sheet rock walls in the Beit Midrash.
What You Can See . . .
Our plumbers are digging up Amsterdam Avenue to connect the new building to the sewer and water systems. ConEd started work last weekend to connect the gas service. The facade installers havestarted installing the trim panel between the stone and the windows.
Behind the Curtains . . .

The project team is trying to expedite delivery of the remaining stone and the pews while looking to find alternative temporary solutions for these critical-path items.




NEW BUILDING UPDATE                    July 20, 2012                 

Construction Progresses on our New Building!

Now that the plumbing has passed inspection, the carpenters are busy closing walls and ceilings in preparation for painting. Installation of the audio-visual equipment has started. The service elevator cab installation is complete and the passenger elevator is being released for fabrication.

What You Can See . . .

The steel of the main stairway from the second to the third floor is complete and installation of the next section has started. The ceiling troughs and serpentine wall are installed in the ballroom. You may have noticed that a hose on the roof has been leaking water; this is temporary and will cease once the sewer is connected.

Behind the Curtains . . .

The boiler filing has been approved by the Department of Buildings and the boilers and water heaters have been delivered. Drawings for the public assembly license and the sprinklers needed for the Temporary Certificate of Occupancy have been submitted for Department of Buildings approval.

Construction Progresses on our New Building!
Ballroom walls that were removed for the foundation repairs have been replaced. The installation of the steel of the main stairs from the second floor to the third floor is complete. The steel for the next section is being delivered. 
What You Can See . . . 
The cab of the service elevator is being installed while the rails of the main elevator are being positioned and aligned.
Behind the Curtains . . . 
You may heard some discussion of water puddles on the roof: these were due to the use of temporary drains pending DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) approval of our sewer connection.  The approval has arrived and work to connect the water and sewer service is now proceeding.

Construction Progresses on our New Building!
The main staircase steel is being installed from the second to the third floor. The sanctuary sprinklers have passed testing. Fabrication of the pews and millwork panels is proceeding.

What You Can See . . .
The curtains are down and the scaffold has been removed except for the South end of the facade.


Behind the Curtains . . .

The plumbing amendment has been approved. Con Ed has scheduled weekend work on the gas service.


 
NEW BUILDING UPDATE           June 29, 2012
 

Construction Progresses on our New Building!
The service elevator is working using the platform that will support the cab. The first section of the main staircase has been delivered. The carpenters and stone installers continue to make progress throughout the building. The HVAC system has been charged with refrigerant and is ready for testing.

What You Can See . . .
The scaffold on the second floor terrace has been removed.

Behind the Curtains . . .


The Building Department has authorized work after-hours until midnight through July 3. The stone that was damaged when two crates fell out of the container in California is being replaced.

Construction Progresses on our New Building!
The building structural reinforcement to support the main staircase to the second and third floors is being installed. The millwork for the main sanctuary is being fabricated at multiple sites to meet schedule.
What You Can See . . . 
The machinery for the service elevator has been installed on the steel support beams and the access hole has been closed ready for stone installation.
Behind the Curtains . . .
The stone delivery from China has cleared customs and is on its way from California to NY. The Department of Environmental Protection has issued the water permits.


NEW BUILDING UPDATE                                                      June 15, 2012

Construction Progresses on our New Building!
Stair X fabrication is proceeding with delivery to begin shortly. Installation depends on reinforcement of the existing floor structure. Priority for the elevator contractor is installation of the elevator machine support beams that will permit closing of the wall opening, completion of the stone, and removal of the scaffold thereby allowing ConEd to install services.  Following intensive coordination, fabrication of the millwork panels for the sanctuary has started.

What You Can See . . . 
Interior stone and kitchen tile work is moving forward as is framing and sheetrock installation. The extensive foundation repair work has now been completed and the new waterproofing is keeping the ball room dry. The new sheetrock wall design, which includes a vapor barrier and insulation, is ready to be released for construction.
 
Behind the Curtains . . .

Con Edison has moved ahead with the paperwork required to install gas and electric service. The Department of Environmental Protection continues to delay the permit for permanent water and sewer connections. The final aron details have been coordinated and fabrication is starting.  The selected fabric for the pew seats failed tests so another fabric has been chosen for testing.

Construction Progresses on our New Building!
The elevator permit has been issued so the new elevator contractor has started work.  The stone installers are working to complete the stone facade so the scaffold can be removed.

What You Can See . . .
 
The scaffolding over the West End Synagogue has been removed satisfying completion of external work on the North wall of the building. Additional supports fro the main stairway are being
installed.


Behind the Curtains . . .
 
Items on the critical path to the Temporary Certificate of Occupancy are being aggressively tracked.  There are many factors, such as the schedule of stone shipping from China, that are not in LSS' control.

Construction Progresses on our New Building!
Fabrication of the main stairway is proceeding on schedule at the contractor's facilities. Sheet rock wall and ceiling construction is moving forward throughout the building.

The stone workers are busy installing the stone adjacent to the glass facade together with the remaining exterior stone work.

Behind the Curtains . . .
The aron design is ready to be released for fabrication.

Construction Progresses on our New Building!
The construction hoist has been removed from the main stairway space clearing the way for continuing its construction. The first section from the lobby to the mezzanine is in use.

What You Can See . . . 
The interior stone for the south wall of the main lobby has been delivered and installation started.

Behind the Curtains . . .
The elevator installation is delayed waiting for the Department of Buildings permit.

Construction Progresses on our New Building!
The Beit Midrash ceiling troughs that hold speakers, sprinklers, and lights have been delivered.
What You Can See . . . 
The concrete for the platform and bima in the

Behind the Curtains . . .
The infrastructure and equipment for audio and video distribution to selected areas of the building has been released. The conduits for the Verizon service have been installed.

Construction Progresses on our New Building!
Our heating and ventilating (HVAC) contractor has been busy installing the kitchen hood, the North entry vestibule heater, and the sanctuary perimeter heating at the bast of the glass ribbon wall.

Construction Progresses on our New Building!

Windows are being installed on the north and west sides of the second and third floors. The carpenters are moving forward with sheetrock installation on walls and ceilings.

What You Can See . . .

Mockup wall panels have been installed in the main sanctuary to ensure that the millwork will fit properly. The ceiling dome is complete.

Behind the Curtains . . .

The partial Certificate of Occupancy plans have been approved by the building department.

 


NEW BUILDING UPDATE

Construction Progresses on our New Building!
The foundation waterproofing passed a double test, resisting water from test hoses and the heavy rain. The roughed-in plumbing also passed its tests so we can move forward closing up the walls and ceilings with sheet rock. 
What You Can See . . . 
The main sanctuary is really taking form as the joints between the dome segments are filled.  Meanwhile, a section of the wall panel supports has been installed so wall panels can be erected to confirm the precision fits required.
Behind the Curtains . . .
A replacement elevator contractor has been selected. Fabrication of the pews has started.

Construction Progresses on our New Building!
The replacement stone installer is checking inventory to make sure all the stone needed to complete the east facade is available. The foundation is being water-tested prior to closing up the ballroom walls. Plumbing and electrical work continues.
 
What You Can See . . .
The sheetrock is substantially complete on the curved upper part of the ballroom walls. Templates are being installed to ensure precise positioning of the main sanctuary wall panels as the ceiling dome installation continues.

The carpet for the main sanctuary has been approved.

Construction Progresses on our New Building!
In this photo, you can see how nicely the work is progressing on assembling the Sanctuary ceiling, high above the Sanctuary floor.
What You Can See . . . 
Nearby, the platform for the Aron Kodesh is being
framed out and fortified at the east end of the Sanctuary.
Behind the Curtains . . .
Sheetrocking and plasterwork is moving at a faster pace in all areas of the building, and rooms are beginning to take form on every level.

Construction Progresses on our New Building!
The curving framing of the upper part of the ballroom walls is nearing completion and ready for sheetrock installation. The electricians and plumbers continue work on the building infrastructure.
What You Can See . . . 
Some of the 613 sanctuary ceiling lights were turned on for the first time to test their connections. 
Behind the Curtains . . .
Remediation continues on the east foundation wall. The main staircase shop drawings are being reviewed so fabrication can begin.

Construction Progresses on our New Building!
The first sections of the inverted dome ceiling of the main sanctuary have been installed and the laser-located holes for the light fixtures have been drilled.  Additionally, the structure to support the aron has been built.  The security contractor has been working late in the evening to finish putting in the wiring.
